CHAPTER 12
Tracking down Jovie Antler wasnât easyâor at least for me it wasnât easy, but Teddy and her crime-fighting cohorts tracked the woman down in less time than it takes Santa to jump onto his magical sleigh.
And speaking of magical sleighs, thatâs exactly what brings us to Santaâs Tree Farm this evening. The tree lot is right here in Glimmerspell, just up the way from Main Street, where rumor has it, Jovie Antler is assisting her new husband, Howard Antler, offload a bevy of evergreen beauties.
Santaâs Tree Farm is lit up with enough twinkle lights to make the noonday sun jealous. Thereâs a hot cocoa stand, a petting zoo with a corral full of reindeer, sled races, and, of course, thereâs Santa sitting on a velvet throne as people of all ages wait their turn to take a picture with him.
âAll right, girls,â Teddy says, clamping her mittens together. âI say we pick the saddest tree you see on the lot, hop back to my place, knock back a few hot toddies, and light that baby up.â
It should probably be noted that Teddy keeps her Christmas decorations up year-round. She has a gorgeous artificial tree in her living room that never fails to delight, but itâs safe to say she feels the same about Christmas trees as she does houseguestsâthe more the merrier.
Harper coos at the thought, âThatâs so sweet, Teddy. You want to buy the saddest tree you can find and give it the best Christmas of its life.â
Teddy shrugs. âThat, and the fact I prefer to get my trees half off.â
Carlotta and Georgie howl at the thought.
âI wait until Christmas Eve Eve,â Georgie says. âBut I like your line of thinking.â
Carlotta nods. âAnd I live with Lot Lot. She buys the trees, the presents, the food, and the hard liquor for the big day.â
Both Georgie and Teddy look at her in awe.
âYou wouldnât happen to have room for one more, would you?â Georgie asks with a smidge of hope in her voice.
âSorry, Toots,â Carlotta bleats. âThereâs no room at the inn.â
âWhere have we heard that before?â Teddy laughs, slapping her friends on the back.
Georgie sighs. âIâll sure miss you ladies once we head our separate ways. And how are we going to decide who gets Willy?â
I make a face as I glance under the red and white tent housing trees in every shape and size to see Willy the footman dressed like a lumberjack while he inspects the trees, more specifically the prices. Just about every hour on the hour he announces that he canât believe there hasnât been a revolt due to the catastrophic costs of living. Heâs not entirely wrong about that.
âI get Willy,â Carlotta says it like the threat Iâm betting it is.
âLadies, ladiesââTeddy does her best to separate the twoâ âdonât fret. Thereâs still plenty of time before we head back to our respective lives. See those sled races over there?â She points to the hillside where an entire slew of elementary-aged schoolchildren and teenagers are having the time of their lives.
